KETO-WEI study in individuals with obesity:

The UAB Department of Nutrition Sciences is conducting a nutrition study looking at whether a ketogenic diet can benefit appetite, while increasing energy expenditure, during weight-loss maintenance in individuals with obesity who have recently lost weight.

You may qualify if you

• are between the ages of 18-65,
• have obesity,
• have NOT been diagnosed with Diabetes,
• are NOT pregnant,
• are willing to consume meal replacements during the weight loss phase (4-6 weeks) and a prescribed diet during the weight maintenance phase (6 weeks), and
• are willing to travel to UAB for testing visits.

Qualified participants will receive free meal replacements for 4 weeks, 3 meals/day for 6 weeks, personal health information (including body composition and metabolism), weekly individual follow-ups with a member of the research team, and monetary compensation for their time.

Researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham are conducting a study on driving readiness and attentional control in teens and young adults who have not driven before. This study examines how attention, coordination, and reaction time relate to safe driving using a virtual driving simulator.

Eligible participants are teens and young adults ages 13 to 21 who have never driven and do not have a developmental, neurological, or psychiatric diagnosis. Participants under 18 must have a parent or guardian available to provide consent.

Participation involves a single 1.5 hour visit to the UAB Driving Simulator Lab, a brief overview of driving rules and safety procedures, a virtual driving simulation similar to a video game, and a short survey about the experience. Parents or guardians may observe the session.

Participants who complete the driving simulator session will receive $50 for their time and effort.

ZION is a clinical research study for adults with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This study will test a study drug injection to learn about its safety, effectiveness, and tolerability (side effects) in participants with COPD.

Participation in the ZION study lasts about 32 weeks. Throughout the entire study, participants will continue to take their daily maintenance COPD medications.

Participate in the PRISM-BP research study at UAB, investigating whether sharing personalized genetic risk scores can help people better control blood pressure.

In this study, participants will attend 7 visits over 12 months. The study involves health checks, blood tests, urine samples, activity tracking, and wearing a 24-hour blood pressure monitor. Some participants will also receive their genetic risk score with counseling.

Eligible participants must be 18–55 years old, have high blood pressure, and have no history of serious heart or kidney problems. Women cannot be pregnant or breastfeeding.

You may be eligible to participate in a research study looking at the effects of sacubitril/valsartan on how your body handles sugar. This medication is related to blood pressure and is safe to take with or without hypertension.

Participate in the PRECISION-BP research study investigating the best time to take blood pressure medication, morning or evening.

In this study, participants will receive blood pressure medications for 28 days. Eligible participants must be obese (BMI: 30-45 kg/m2) men and women, have high blood pressure, and have no history of heart or kidney problems.

The study involves wearing a blood pressure monitor for 24 hours, 24-hour inpatient visits at UAB Hospital, taking medications, and collecting blood and urine samples. Meals will be provided at no cost.

About the Study

The iADAPT study is a 16-week study designed to determine which weight loss program features are most effective in people with a physical disability. Participants will follow one of two diets and may be given additional nutritional or exercise counseling. The study provides weekly coaching, body composition assessment, and lab work to assess diabetes and heart disease risk.

• Physical disability or mobility impairment

Researchers at UAB are studying how a ketone supplement may influence brain function, attention, and driving performance. The Alabama Vaccine Research Clinic (AVRC) at UAB is seeking healthy adults ages 18 to 65 to take part in a national HIV prevention study. This Phase 2 clinical trial is testing the safety and potential benefits of three investigational monoclonal antibodies—lab-made proteins that may help the body block HIV. These antibodies are given by IV infusion, not as a shot or vaccine, and participants are never exposed to HIV. Help our researchers learn how each person's genes, cultural backgrounds, and environment may allow them to tailor diets to individuals and improve overall health in this 2 Phase study. Participants must be 19 years of age or older and be enrolled in the All of Us Research Program.

Learn more about a clinical trial examining a potential new treatment for depression in adult patients. Managing symptoms of depression can feel overwhelming, but you are not alone.

If you experience symptoms such as sadness, diminished interest or pleasure in things that you once enjoyed, appetite changes, sleep changes, fatigue, feelings of worthlessness or guilt, or thoughts of suicide or harming yourself, you may qualify for a clinical trial examining a new treatment option for depression. The Vitalize Clinical Study is evaluating a new type of investigational treatment for patients with depression that works differently than traditional antidepressants.

The study will include a total of 9 visits with the study doctor, over a period of 14 weeks. If you are qualified to participate, you will receive either the study drug, or placebo, as an oral tablet administered one time per week in the study clinic. As a study participant, you will also receive once-weekly evaluations of your depression and other symptoms, physical examinations and tests of your blood, urine, heart, and brain activity at no cost.

The AI-READI research program is gathering health data from people with and without type 2 diabetes, to create a dataset that will be used by scientists to improve our understanding of type 2 diabetes and other areas of health using artificial intelligence.

Eligible participants must be at least 40 years old. You are not eligible if you are currently pregnant or have been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.

Participation in AI-READI involves questionnaires completed at home, a single 3-4 hour visit to UAB’s Callahan Eye Hospital to collect basic health data (vitals, EKG, blood and urine samples, cognitive test, vision testing, eye imaging), and 10 days of at-home monitoring using a fitness tracker, a continuous glucose monitor, and an environmental sensor.

Are you at least 18 years old and have been previously diagnosed with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and would like or are in need of a comprehensive psychological evaluation?

If so, you may be eligible to participate in a research study where you will receive a free comprehensive psychological evaluation involving a diagnostic interview, cognitive testing such as achievement and intelligence testing, and a personality assessment.

Participation involves approximately 7 to 8 hours of a full psychological evaluation to assess you for ADHD and other potential mental health concerns. The assessment may occur over either one or multiple days, depending on your preference.

In exchange for participation, all participants will receive a full comprehensive psychological report detailing the findings of your evaluation. This report will be a standard medical report that can be utilized to seek mental health treatment, academic or work accommodations, or meet other needs.

Help us find out by joining our study. The University of Alabama at Birmingham, Division of General Internal Medicine and Population Science is conducting an exciting research study to see if changing the time you eat can help with weight loss after having a baby. If you participate, you will either keep your normal eating schedule or change to a shortened daily eating window. If you are randomly chosen to do shortened daily eating window, you will fast for 15 hours per day and eat dinner by 6 pm about 6 days per week (1 break day per week).

You may qualify if:

• You had a baby in the last 3 months
• Your BMI is 25 or more- find your BMI at this link

We are looking for adults with type 2 diabetes for an exciting research study to see whether intermittent fasting and/or using light therapy can improve your blood sugar, improve your overall health, and reset your body clock. Participants will either eat early in the day, graze throughout the day, and/or use a special light therapy box or glasses. You may be eligible if you have type 2 diabetes, are 30-80 years old, are not taking insulin, and usually wake up between 5:00 and 9:00 am. The main part of the study lasts 16 weeks and involves two overnight tests in our clinic (which can be done on weekends, if preferred). Participants will receive $2,400 for completing the study.

BrainREAD is recruiting children, ages 7-13, with reading comprehension difficulties.

This study includes a free reading intervention through Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes. We are also recruiting children with no reading difficulties to participate. Participation involves a pre and post session which are broken up into two days each. Day 1 consist of paper and pencil evaluations and Day 2 consists of an MRI scan. Do you struggle with anxiety, depression, or feel that your quality of life has suffered due to your HIV diagnosis?

Researchers in the Department of Psychology at The University of Alabama at Birmingham are conducting a clinical trial of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for the treatment of mental health concerns among men who have sex with men and are living with HIV.

Volunteers will attend 8 weekly roughly 1 hour sessions of psychotherapy delivered via HIPAA-compliant Zoom by a doctoral student in Medical/Clinical Psychology at University of Alabama at Birmingham. If you have the JAK2 V617F mutation, are aged 18-74 years old, do not smoke, do not have any known autoimmune disease, and attend medical checks at UAB regularly, you may be eligible for our study!

This study focuses on better understanding how diet influences quality of life in MPN patients. We will test whether an anti-inflammatory food regime can help alleviate symptoms and decelerate disease progression.

Participants will meet with study staff to collect non-invasive samples, undergo anthropometric and metabolic measurements, and answer study related questionnaires. Samples to be collected include blood and stool samples.

Participants will be compensated $50 for each visit and providing samples if simply continuing their regular food intake, or $90 each month if trying an anti-inflammatory food regime for 3 months and completing the study visits and providing samples. Participants who adhere to an anti-inflammatory regime and would like to continue a further 9 months may be eligible to continue participating with a compensation of $90 per month. Study participants in all groups would receive information related to body inflammation, vitamin D levels, and metabolism if desired.

If you are randomly selected to do calorie restriction, you may lose weight by eating less. If you are randomly selected to do intermittent fasting, you will fast for 16 hours per day and eat dinner by 6 pm about 6 days per week (1 break day per week). We are looking for individuals with spinal cord injury to participate in a home based exercise program for improving cardiometabolic health outcomes, such as body weight, blood sugar, cholesterol, and cardiovascular fitness. To qualify you must have a confirmed diagnosis of SCI at the cervical or thoracic level (C7-T12, classified as A, B, C, or D on the AIS scale), be at least 3 years post-injury, aged 19-65 years old. To join the RECOVER study you must be 18 years or older and: currently depressed, have bi-polar depression that has lasted for at least two years or recurred several times, and have tried at least four types of antidepressant treatments and not found them helpful. We are looking for adults for an exciting research study to see whether meal timing can improve your blood sugar, blood pressure, and your overall health. Participants will be randomized to follow an eating schedule for 8 weeks. You may be eligible if you are 30-70 years old, BMI between 30-60 kg/m2, are not taking diabetes medication, and wake up between 5:00 and 8:00 am regularly. Adults with prediabetes, blood sugar issues, or a family history of diabetes are encouraged to apply. This study involves two overnight tests plus eating only food that we provide you.
