At UAB School of Education, our goal is to create the most prepared, inspired, and dynamic practitioners in the workforce today.
We are committed to meeting the evolving needs of preschool and school-aged learners in today’s rapidly changing society by delivering cutting-edge instruction through a standards-based, inquiry-focused approach. Based on constructivism, this approach prepares educators for using state-of-the-art instructional strategies in their own classrooms.
The Alabama State Board of Education has approved the following programs: Special Education, Instructional Leadership, Secondary English Language Arts, and Social Studies through June 30, 2025, with the rest of our programs approved through June 30, 2028. Undergraduate
At the undergraduate level, we offer programs in early childhood and elementary education, as well as secondary education with concentrations in English Language Arts and General Social Sciences. For undergraduate students interested in teaching math or science at the middle or high school level, we offer an innovative program known as UABTeach, which allows students majoring in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) fields to receive both their subject matter degree and full teaching certification in four years at no extra time or cost.
For students interested in teaching music in pre-kindergarten through high school, we offer concentrations in vocal/choral and instrumental music education through a collaborative program with the UAB College of Arts and Sciences.
Through our kinesiology program we offer a concentration in physical education teacher certification for students interested in teaching physical education to grades pre-kindergarten through high school.

Traditional Master's Program
The traditional master’s program is designed for individuals who hold an undergraduate degree in education and a Class B teaching certificate and wish to earn a master’s degree in education (M.A.Ed.) and a Class A teaching certificate. The traditional master’s program is offered in the following areas:

Alternative Master's Program (AMP)
The Alternative Master’s Program (AMP) is designed for individuals who hold an undergraduate degree in a field outside of education and who want to become certified teachers with a master’s degree in education (M.A.Ed.).
