UAB’s Secondary Education program prepares future educators to recognize and meet the evolving needs of students in today’s society. Intellectually curious and career-minded students have a variety of options with the General Social Sciences teaching certification degree from UAB. Social scientists study all aspects of society, from historical events and human achievements to the geographic landscape and the formation of a government. The General Social Sciences teaching certification degree offers a curriculum across many departments. This program prepares candidates to teach grades 6-12.

As a secondary education student majoring in General Social Sciences, your interest may be history, geography, economics, political science, psychology, or sociology. With such a broad spectrum of study, you are able to craft your educational experience to maximize your analytical skills and potential for employment or further investigation through a higher degree.

  • 6 out of the last 9 Alabama Teachers of the Year are alumni of the UAB School of Education.
  • Learning to teach diverse populations is paramount to our work. During your time at the UAB School of Education, you will have teaching field experiences in urban, suburban, and rural environments.
  • Students can participate in service-learning opportunities, including mentoring high school students throughout the state with GEAR UP Alabama.
  • Unique courses in public history and Birmingham historic preservation are available through this degree program.
  • Teacher candidates learn how to develop and strengthen their students’ analysis skills and content area thinking skills as they explore the unique dimensions and components of economics, geography, civics, and history.
  • HY 497, the History Capstone course, offers the opportunity for students to participate in research, including a paper and presentation, with a faculty advisor.
