Christopher Edmonds, Ph.D., has been named the UAB Alumni and Friends Professor in Accounting at the UAB Collat School of Business.

The University of Alabama System Board of Trustees established the endowed position in 1990 and appointed Edmonds to the prestigious post on April 4. It was previously held by Frank Messina, Ph.D.

Arline Savage, Ph.D., chair of the Accounting and Finance Department at Collat, said Edmonds’s commitment to excellence in education made him a natural choice for the endowed professorship.

“His commitment to shaping the future of accounting education has earned him a reputation as an innovator in this area,” she said. “He is a talented teacher, a productive scholar, and a dedicated member of the accounting community.”

Edmonds joined Collat’s faculty as an assistant professor in 2013 after earning his doctorate in accounting from Virginia Tech and teaching at the University of Delaware for three years.

He has received numerous teaching awards, including the UAB President's Outstanding Teaching Award, UAB Faculty Student Success Award, UAB Transformative Online Course Award, Collat School of Business Graduate Student Teaching Award, UAB Loudell Ellis Robinson Classroom Teaching Award, UAB Disability Support Recognition Award, and the Virginia Tech Favorite Faculty Award.

Edmonds is renowned for his innovative approach to teaching and developing introductory accounting courses, both online and in person. He developed a team-teaching model and innovative gamification app to help solve engagement challenges in the classroom, which earned him international recognition and a Silver Medal in the Wharton Reimagine Education Awards.

Edmonds also has authored four highly regarded accounting textbooks, one of which is the market leader in its category, and created hundreds of instructional videos providing comprehensive, concept-by-concept guidance in introductory accounting for his students.

As a prolific academic researcher, his articles have been published in numerous top-tier accounting journals, including The Accounting Review.

Before entering academia, Edmonds worked as a software developer, creating solutions to put newspapers online. He also is a UAB Collat School of Business alumnus, having earned his MBA from the school in 2006.
