Instructions for USMLE Step 1 Registration
The NBME.org and USMLE.org have useful resources, including the USMLE Checklist and the USMLE 2026 Bulletin, to assist you in registering and preparing for Step 1. Your learning specialist is the best resource for preparation.
Part 1: Apply through NBME
- Visit the MyUSMLE Portal to create an account.
- Enter your name exactly how it appears on the identification (i.e., driver’s license; passport) that you will present the day you take the exam.
- Your ID must also match your medical school records. If you need to update your name with the medical school, please follow name change instructions.
Note: The MyUSMLE Portal will require you to verify your identity using ID.me to continue with your registration. First time applicants and examinees with expired identity verification will need to complete this step in the MyUSMLE Portal prior to scheduling the exam.
- The NBME will e-mail you with a link to set up your password and to Identify your USMLE ID.
This may take 2 business days. Please keep your USMLE ID number somewhere secure, as you will need it to register for future exams.
When you receive your USMLE ID, log in and click + New Application to apply for an exam.- It is recommended to read the Bulletin of Information prior to applying to take an USMLE exam
- Select Exam and Eligibility Period.

- Regular MD: March – May
- MSTP: April – June
- OMFS: per your program guidelines

- Ensure your name matches your medical school record and the ID you will use on test day.
- If you plan to apply for testing accommodations, review the Applying for USMLE accommodation information listed below. Some personal medical and mobility devices do not require accommodations.
- Select Exam and Eligibility Period.
- It is recommended to read the Bulletin of Information prior to applying to take an USMLE exam
- Submit the application and pay the registration fee.
- Once submitted, the School of Medicine will certify your enrollment in NBME’s website within 3 business days.
- There is a fee assistance program for students with demonstrated financial need. You must have a valid USMLE ID to apply. You can apply here.
Part 2: Schedule Your Exam with NBME
- The NBME will process your registration and once accepted, they will e-mail you a scheduling permit. This can take 10-15 business days.
- Schedule by selecting an exam date and test location via Prometric. Each Prometric test center is run independently and decisions about when to open seats for scheduling is location specific. Historically, Alabama locations release April availability in November/December.
- You can change your exam date/location for free up to 46 days before your exam; changes within 45 days incur a fee.
Applying for USMLE accommodations
- Mark the appropriate box in the application to indicate that you are requesting accommodations.
- You will not be able to schedule a test date until the USMLE has reviewed your application.
- You do not need to request test accommodations for some medical and mobility devices. Review the personal device exception for items permitted in the secure exam area.
- If you have not already met with Dr. Melinda Harrison, please schedule an appointment with her by September 15.
