Department Benefit Summary
Professional Development
A portion of the Department's annual operating budget is allocated to promote and support the academic growth of our residents each fiscal year. This is accomplished by providing each resident a Professional Development Account (PDA) with a defined level of annual funding. Residents receive $1000 to $1500 per year depending on their year of training to be used for educational expenses. At the resident's discretion, these can include:
- Professional books and journals
- Software
- Medical equipment such as stethoscopes
- Electronic devices used for educational purposes such as cell phone and personal digital assistants
- Travel expenses for medical meetings
- Medical society memberships
Residents who represent the department by presenting research at scientific meetings or acting as a resident representatives to organizations such as the American Society of Anesthesiologists receive additional funding to support these activities.

Residents receive 15 days paid annual vacation each year and 5 paid meeting days for education related travel.
