The UAB Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine Residency Program is a national leader in anesthesia education, combining broad clinical experiences, a strong didactic program and opportunities for leadership, research, and unique educational opportunities.
The didactic curriculum is continuously refined based on resident feedback and outcomes and is designed to ensure residents are well prepared for practice and board certification process.
- Weekly, level-specific curriculum is provided including assigned virtual learning modules, and a live faculty led small group discussion
- Department wide core curriculum lectures, visiting professors, and continuous quality improvement sessions weekly via Zoom

The clinical experience occurs primarily at University Hospital. The affiliated hospitals are all located within the Birmingham metro area and each provides unique beneficial educational experiences: Children’s Hospital of Alabama, UAB Highlands, and Birmingham Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
Optional educational experiences are available allowing every resident to choose opportunities that match their goals. These opportunities include mentored research, educational assistance, moonlighting, and leadership opportunities spanning the department and institution.
