Admission to the MSTP is designed to identify applicants with strong academic preparation, a demonstrated commitment to research, and clear potential for a career as a physician‑scientist.
The process is holistic and occurs in multiple stages, allowing the admissions committee to evaluate both scientific experience and overall fit with the program’s training environment. Beginning with the AMCAS application and continuing through secondary review, interviews, and final selection, each step is intended to build a comprehensive understanding of an applicant’s background, interests, and goals within the MD‑PhD pathway.
Process
Apply through AMCAS
Submit the standard medical school application (AMCAS).

Include MD–PhD-specific essays:

Submit letters of recommendation, including at least one from a research mentor.
Initial Screening
The MSTP admissions team reviews your application to check if you meet program standards.
Outcomes

Move forward and receive a secondary application, or

Stop MSTP consideration (with option to be considered MD‑only).
Secondary Application

Provide more detailed information on:

Research interests and goals

Faculty interests

Updates (publications, CV, transcripts, etc.)

Submit required materials (including photo and fee).
Second Review
Admissions committee evaluates your full file again.
Outcomes

Invitation to interview, or

No further MSTP consideration (option to continue MD‑only).
Interview Process
Conducted over two days:

Interviews with MSTP admissions committee

Medical school interview (including Multiple Mini Interview format)

Includes meetings with research faculty aligned with your interests.

After interviews, the admissions committee reviews candidates and selects applicants for admission.
Acceptance & Optional Second Visit
Accepted applicants may be invited to visit campus again. This visit includes:
