Our Categorical Program leads to board eligibility in internal medicine after completion of a three-year residency program. Approximately seven Categorical Program positions are offered each year.
All our residency positions are filled through the National Resident Matching Program.
Only electronic applications submitted via the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) are accepted.
We strongly advise interested applicants to signal (gold or silver) our program, as we are unlikely to interview applicants who do not signal us.
Due to a large volume of applicant inquiries, please do not contact our program via email or telephone. Signal the program to signify interest.

International medical graduates may access ERAS through the Education Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates. Canadian medical school graduates should contact the Canadian Resident Matching Service for ERAS.
We prefer IMG candidates have documented at least one month of U.S. clinical experience and have at least one letter of recommendation from a physician who can attest to this clinical experience. Research is not considered U.S. clinical experience.
Selection Policy
Academic records, letters of recommendation, USMLE or COMLEX scores, supplemental application and applicants’ personal statement are considered in choosing applicants to interview for our program. Due to a high volume of applications, interviews will be offered only to applicants who signal (gold or silver) the program. Read UAB's Equal Opportunity Statement for more information.
All interviews are extended through the program's Selection and Review Committee. We use Thalamus for scheduling and re-scheduling interviews. All information will be sent to you via Thalamus if you are invited for an interview with our program.
Interview Information
In each recruiting period, our application deadline is December 1, with interviews held virtually beginning in early November.
