Important Shipping Information
Time-Sensitive RNA Specimens
Specimens submitted for RNA-based testing must be maintained at ambient temperature and received by the laboratory within 60–72 hours of collection.

- Do not ship specimens on ice unless the specific test instructions state otherwise.
- Ship specimens using Priority service, either domestic or international, as applicable.
- Package specimens to prevent breakage. Include sufficient absorbent material to contain liquids if breakage occurs. Specimens must be shipped in double watertight containers, such as a specimen pouch placed inside the shipping carrier’s diagnostic envelope.
- Collection kits are available upon request. Please complete the Collection Kit Request Form.
- Before shipping a specimen, please contact the UAB Medical Genomics Laboratory by email at medgenomics@uabmc.edu or by phone at 205-934-5562. Please provide the specimen type, shipment date, and package tracking number so the laboratory can help ensure proper and timely receipt.
Saturday Deliveries
If a specimen must be shipped on Friday for Saturday delivery, you must contact the UAB Medical Genomics Laboratory by 2:00 PM Central Time on Friday to obtain approval before shipment.
Saturday deliveries are reserved for RNA-based testing and other time-sensitive specimens. Prior authorization is required.
