The Regional Anesthesia and Acute Pain Medicine (RAAPM) fellowship program consists of twelve months of post-graduate training after successful completion of an accredited residency program in Anesthesiology. The RAAPM fellowship is tied to a part-time faculty position in the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). We offer two fellowship positions at present and we encourage external candidates to apply early.

The RAAPM program at UAB specializes in perioperative management of patients receiving peripheral nerve or neuraxial blockade for anesthesia and/or acute post-operative analgesia. Our primary goal is to provide high quality patient care and effective management of acute pain for patients undergoing surgery. Our program provides acute pain management for patients undergoing orthopedic, pediatrics, trauma, thoracic vascular, plastic and general surgery. Our fellows consistently perform 1,000+ peripheral nerve blocks and neuraxial blocks per year including peripheral and neuraxial catheters.

Fellowship training is designed to develop expertise in the practice and theory of regional anesthesia and acute pain management techniques. The program emphasizes pre-operative assessment, patient selection, patient education and in-depth understanding of physiology and pharmacology in the provision of patient care. Fellowship training includes rotations in Obstetric, pediatric regional, clinical research and Inpatient Pain Service anesthesia. Fellows also rotate through "Point of Care Ultrasound (PoCUS)" and work with experts in this field.

Our comprehensive didactic program includes departmental grand rounds, journal club, and weekly lecture series. We also host an annual Ultrasound Guided Regional Anesthesia workshop as an integrated part of our department’s annual Anesthesiology Review Course. Fellows are also expected to be integral to medical student and resident education and will participate in educational activities such as mock oral boards, problem based learning, and simulation.
