The UAB General Surgery Residency Program is dedicated to cultivating future leaders in academic surgery. Research is central to this mission, and the Department of Surgery provides residents with access to state-of-the-art laboratories, cutting-edge scientific resources, mentorship from leaders in surgical innovation, and an increased travel budget to support residents as they present their work.

Residents are encouraged to pursue dedicated research time in one of the following areas after their PGY-2 year: Basic Science, Outcomes and Health Services, and Education Research. During this time, residents work closely with faculty mentors, diving deep into their specific research interests. This experience allows them to contribute to publications and present findings at national and international conferences.

During their dedicated research time, many of our residents pursue advanced degrees, such as MBAs, MSHAs, MPHs, and Ph.D.s, which further enhances their academic and professional growth.

In addition to the opportunities within research labs, the program offers a monthly “Lunch and Learn” series, where residents meet with nationally recognized leaders in surgical research.

Our program also participates in a Resident Research Day exchange program with The University of Wisconsin, Baylor University, and Texas Children’s Hospital. This partnership offers residents the invaluable opportunity to present their research and connect with peers from top institutions across the country.

Dr. Karin Hardiman serves as the Assistant Program Director for Resident Research.
