Awards

Each year, UAB Surgery residents select two faculty to receive the Junior Faculty Teaching Award and the Senior Faculty Teaching Award. In turn, the faculty select two residents to receive the Junior Resident Teaching Award and the Senior Resident Teaching Award. These awards, as well as the Mark H. Deierhoi Faculty Mentor Award, Chief Resident of the Year and Intern of the Year are announced each year at the annual General Surgery Resident Graduation Chiefs' Dinner and celebrate the spirit of teaching within the UAB Department of Surgery.

  • Mark H. Deierhoi Faculty Mentor Award

    In honor of Dr. Mark Deierhoi and his dedication to education, the department created the Mark Deierhoi Faculty Mentor Award in 2020. Voted on by the PGY3 & PGY4 classes, This annual award will recognize a surgical faculty member who exhibits the characteristics of mentorship, patience and dedication to surgical training that Dr. Mark Deirhoi provided during his 34 years of service to the UAB Department of Surgery. The established award comes with a cash stipend that the award winner can designate to the charity of their choice.
