Explore UAB

UAB’s General Surgery Residency Program provides residents with clinical experience at a high-volume, level-one hospital. Resident training is enhanced with a variety of unique opportunities to develop as a surgeon and an academic physician, including research participation, extensive robotic surgery training, international training opportunities, and more. We are passionate about training the next generation of academic surgeons.

Training takes place across five facilities in downtown Birmingham as part of the UAB Medical Center District: University Hospital, The Kirklin Clinic, the Birmingham Veterans Administration Medical Center, Children’s Hospital of Alabama and UAB Highlands Hospital.

Experience, Culture & Pathways

UAB Hospital is the third-largest public hospital in the U.S. with 1,157 licensed beds. More than 40,000 operative procedures are performed annually at UAB, providing trainees with abundant opportunities. On average, our residents perform 1,390 procedures during their residency. As the state’s only Level 1 Trauma Center, UAB provides training opportunities in a wide variety of complex cases.

  • Traditional, Categorical Pathway

Six categorical residents are accepted into the program each year through the National Residency Match Program.

  • Cardiothoracic Integrated Pathway

The General Surgery residency program is integrated with the Cardiothoracic residency program and matches one Cardiothoracic 4/3 resident into this unique and specialized training pathway each year. Interested residents can apply to this collaborative program via different pathways, which are listed on the Cardiothoracic Residency program website.

  • Military Match Pathway
Through a coalition with the Defense Health Agency, we will accept and train one of DHA residents each year. This resident will account for one of the eight General Surgery residency spots.

“The mission of the UAB General Surgery Residency Program is to train residents to pursue individualized paths towards the common goal of clinical excellence and leadership in surgery in order to provide compassionate, high quality care and improve the practice of medicine.”

Welcome to the UAB General Surgery Residency Program!

Thank you for visiting our website. Here, you'll find information about our training program and the exceptional opportunities available to our residents.

At UAB, we are committed to developing the next generation of academic surgical leaders. Our high-volume, Level I trauma center provides residents with extensive experience managing complex and critically ill patients. In addition to robust clinical training, residents benefit from a range of opportunities to grow as surgeons and scholars—including dedicated research time, international electives, and more. We are also unique in that we have multiple tracks within our program – an integrated Cardiothoracic 4/3 program, an Active Duty Army Military Civilian Partnership, and a Global Health Track. These special pathways support our goal of tailoring training to the specific needs of our trainees and that goal extends to every resident in our program.

We are dedicated to supporting each resident’s individual career pathways while preparing them to thrive in the field of academic surgery. Ours is a tight-knit program where residents' voices are heard, valued, and instrumental in shaping the training environment.

We invite you to explore our site and learn more about General Surgery Residency training at UAB.

      Britney Corey, M.D., MACM, FACS
