UAB Enterprise Mental Health Advocate Program for Students

The UAB Enterprise Mental Health Advocate Program offers you a platform to showcase your commitment to promoting a culture of mental health awareness at UAB. As a trained UAB Mental Health Advocate, you are empowered to identify peers in distress, provide guidance, and recommend mental health resources for the UAB community. And by proudly displaying a Mental Health Advocate Badge, you can inspire others to prioritize well-being in their own lives.

UAB Mental Health Advocates are NOT trained to offer mental health or crisis counseling and coaching.

    Earning the Mental Health Advocate Level 1 badge showcases your commitment to promoting mental health awareness, reducing stigma and fostering an inclusive environment.

    Eligibility

    Certificate program is available to all enrolled UAB students.

    Registration

    To begin your Mental Health Advocate Level 1 training, students will find the Mental Health Advocate Certificate Program in their Canvas dashboard. Students will complete assignments for each level. Certificate requirements will be tracked in Canvas and when completed, students will be issued the digital certificate (or badge) automatically.

    Training Requirements

    • Be There Certificate
      Be There Certificate

      The Be There Certificate offers tools that can help individuals recognize the signs of mental health concerns and provide guidance about how to initiate conversations with those who may be struggling and connect them with appropriate resources. After course completion, you will submit your certificate in Canvas.

      To get started:

      • Use the button below to access the Be There Certificate website.
      • If you are a new user, create an account using your @uab.edu email address. If you have already created an account, select "Sign In."
      • Follow the instructions to complete registration and begin the course.
      • Your progress will save along the way, so you can take a break and resume the course at any time. After completion, submit your certificate in Canvas.

    • UABwell App
      UABwell App

      Download the UABwell app from Google Play or the Apple App Store and explore the employee profile, build a self-care plan and explore features of the app.

      Upon completion, you will submit an attestation in Canvas.

    • Therapy Assistance Online (TAO)
      Therapy Assistance Online (TAO)

      TAO is an evidence-based online platform that offers brief education sessions covering over 50 common topics related to mental health and wellness. Employees must activate their TAO account to complete this requirement. After completing all assignments, you will submit your course completion certificate in Canvas.

      To get started:

      • Sign Up: Use the TAO for UAB button below to create your account.
      • Authenticate: Login using your Blazer ID and password, then complete DUO for two-factor authentication.
      • Complete Your Profile (optional): You may provide demographic information on the landing page.
      • Future Logins: Next time you access TAO, simply log in with your email address (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.).
      • Complete your assigned content by following the instructions in TAO. After completing all assignments, submit your course completion certificate for the TAO quiz in Canvas.

      Togetherall

      Togetherall is a 24-7 anonymous online chat platform offers instant access to mental health support from a diverse and safe community of real people. Togetherall works in partnership with colleges across the country to provide students with free access.

      Upon completion, you will submit an attestation in Canvas.

      Overview of UAB Wellness Resources

      Watch a video outlining wellness resources available for students at UAB. The Overview of UAB Wellness Resources video is available in the Mental Health Advocate Level 1 Learning Path.

      After reviewing, you will complete a brief quiz in Canvas.

    Earning the Mental Health Advocate Level 2 badge recognizes you have completed evidence-based training to identify and support peers experiencing mental health challenges, leading to a safer and more supportive campus community and promoting a culture of mental health awareness.

    Eligibility

    The Level 2 Certificate is available to all enrolled UAB students who have completed the Mental Health Advocate Level 1 Certificate requirements.

    Registration

    To begin your Mental Health Advocate Level 2 training, students will find the Mental Health Advocate Certificate Program course in their Canvas dashboard. Students will complete assignments for Level 2. Requirements will be tracked in Canvas and when completed, students will be issued the digital certificate/badge automatically.

    Training Requirements

    As each step is completed, Canvas will track your progress and update accordingly.

    • QPR
      QPR Suicide Prevention Gatekeeper Training

      QPR Suicide Prevention Gatekeeper Training is an evidence-based workshop that aims to equip participants with the knowledge and skills to recognize and respond to warning signs of people in crisis, particularly those who may be considering suicide. With suicide being a prevalent issue today, it is crucial to have individuals who are trained to intervene and provide support to those who are struggling with mental health issues. Attending a QPR workshop can provide you with the necessary tools to potentially save a life and make a positive impact in your community. Workshop opportunities are listed in the Canvas course. Students will need to register for a QPR training.

      Upon completion, you will upload your certificate of completion to Canvas.

  • UABCares MHA LevelTwo

    The Mental Health Fellow badge represents the highest level of mental health training and expertise. Earning the Mental Health Fellow badge shows you possess advanced skills to address mental health challenges, respond to critical incidents and educate others on cultivating a coordinated approach to mental health and well-being on campus.

    Eligibility

    The Mental Health Fellow Certificate for students is available for enrolled UAB students who have completed the Mental Health Advocate Level 2 requirements.

    Training Requirements

    • Mental Health First Aid
      Mental Health First Aid

      Mental Health First Aid can equip you with essential skills to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders. This comprehensive course is designed for individuals in different fields of work, including healthcare, education, and public service, to provide mental health support to those who may be experiencing a crisis. With an emphasis on empowering you to offer initial assistance and support, the course can enable you to make a significant difference in someone's life.

      Individuals must complete pre-work and attend the all-day virtual training to receive full credit.

    Information about Mental Health First Aid trainings are available in the Mental Health Advocate Certificate Program course. Group, class, or student organizations may request Mental Health First Aid trainings by completing this training request form and including “Mental Health First Aid” in the request.
