The Division of Pediatric Surgery provides surgical care for newborns, children and adolescents at Children's Hospital of Alabama, the tertiary referral center for the state and much of the Southeast. Every surgeon in the division is fellowship-trained in pediatric surgery and devotes their practice exclusively to the care of children.
Patient care is coordinated with other fellowship-trained pediatric specialists to ensure children receive the most current, comprehensive care available.
The division's clinical work is organized around the following areas of care:
- Neonatal Surgery: Repair of congenital anomalies such as congenital diaphragmatic hernia, esophageal atresia, abdominal wall defects and intestinal atresia. ECMO support is available for the most critically ill newborns.
- General and Thoracic Surgery: The full range of routine and complex operations of childhood, from hernia repair and appendicitis to chest wall deformities and airway and lung lesions.
- Pediatric Surgical Oncology: Resection of solid tumors such as neuroblastoma, Wilms tumor, hepatoblastoma and sarcoma, coordinated with pediatric hematology-oncology and radiation oncology.
- Minimally Invasive Surgery: Laparoscopic, thoracoscopic and endoscopic approaches selected to reduce pain, and potential healing and recovery time.
- Colorectal and Pelvic Reconstruction: Treatment of anorectal malformations, Hirschsprung disease and complex bowel management needs, with long-term follow-up into adolescence.
- Pediatric Trauma and Burn Care: Surgical care for injured children as part of the pediatric trauma program at Children's Hospital of Alabama.
