Fourteen UAB chief residents recently completed the Chief Residents Leadership Development Workshop. The program, presented by the UAB Medicine Leadership Development Office, was held on May 9, 2025.
The Chief Residents Leadership Development Workshop is focused on helping chief residents from core residency programs build their leadership competencies.
The sessions include small-group breakout sessions that provide chief residents with the tools, skills, and learning opportunities to enhance their understanding of interpersonal communication and group dynamics, which are critical to success and satisfaction as clinical leaders.
"These residents are to be commended for working to develop their leadership skills at such an early stage in their careers,” said Matt Sherrer, M.D., MBA, FASA, FAACD, clinical consultant to the Leadership Development Office. “The chief year can be a challenge, but it is also a fantastic stepping stone into either private or academic practice, where leading teams becomes a huge part of a physician's daily role. These chief residents were so engaged and so thoughtful in their questions and discussions that I am truly optimistic and excited for our next generation of physician leaders.”
