Centers and Institutes at UAB bring together faculty, staff, and students—often across multiple disciplines—to address specialized needs and tackle pressing societal challenges. These entities serve as hubs of innovation, collaboration, and impact, leveraging shared expertise and resources to advance research, education, and service.
Centers and institutes that meet the criteria outlined in Board Rule 503 represent a significant institutional investment. In recognition of their scope and potential, the Office of Research may designate qualifying centers as University-Wide Interdisciplinary Research Centers (UWIRCs). This designation reflects a center’s growth, cross-campus relevance, and capacity to serve the broader university community—beyond the boundaries of a single school or department.
