UAB’s Wound, Ostomy, and Continence (WOC) team was recently featured on a podcast for WOC teams nationwide.
After being recognized earlier this year with the 2025 Employer Recognition Award from the Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nursing Certification Board (WOCNCB), the UAB WOC team was invited to speak on the WOCNCB Certification Inspiration podcast, a program which shares conversations with nurses certified in wound, ostomy, continence, and foot care, health care advocates, patients, and more.
The podcast hosts talked to UAB WOC team members about how they foster a culture where “specialized knowledge is both recognized, appreciated, and harnessed for the benefit of all patients.” The episode focuses on why UAB’s WOC team is a “model of excellence” through multidisciplinary collaboration and the empowerment of Certified Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nurses (CWOCNs) as subject matter experts.
The featured UAB speakers are:
- Terry Poe, DNP, NP, NE-BC, Chief Nursing Officer of UAB
- Marty Vander Noot, M.D., Chief of Inpatient Wound Care Services and Professor in the Division of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery
- Holly Waller, R.N., MPH – Senior Director of Trauma, Burn & Inpatient Wound Services
- Kelly Chapman, BSN, RN, CWOCN – WOC Team Lead
- Dylan Carpenter, MSN, RN, CWOCN, PCCN, MEDSURG-BC
- Bridgitt Vola, MSN, RN, CWOCN, CRRN
Through their discussion, the team reflected on the integral role CWOCNs play in improving outcomes for patients with complex needs, as well as the importance of creating an environment where specialty certification is encouraged and celebrated.
The Certification Inspiration Podcast episode featuring UAB Hospital is available for download on the WOCNCB website, and can also be accessed through iTunes and YouTube.
