UAB Department of Surgery welcomes five faculty members in August

Five new faculty members joined the UAB Department of Surgery in August: Dr. Peter Abraham, Dr. Samantha Lloy, Dr. Jennifer Pappalardo, Dr. Anji Wall, and Dr. Taylor Wallen. We invite you to learn more about them and help us extend a warm UAB welcome!

About Dr. Peter Abraham

Peter Abraham, M.D., MSPH, has joined the UAB Division of Breast & Endocrine Surgery as an assistant professor.

Dr. Abraham obtained his medical degree from the Johns Hopkins University and then arrived at UAB, where he completed his general surgery residency. While completing his residency, he also earned his MSPH in biostatistics. After residency, he stayed at UAB, serving as the UAB Section of Endocrine Surgery American Association of Endocrine Surgeons (AAES) fellow. Through this fellowship, Dr. Abraham gained extensive exposure to cutting-edge and advanced/minimally invasive techniques in thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal surgery, including radiofrequency ablation, ultrasonography, radio-guided parathyroidectomy, laryngoscopy, and all approaches to adrenalectomy.

About Dr. Samantha Lloy

Samantha Lloy, M.D., has also joined the UAB Division of Breast & Endocrine Surgery as a clinical assistant professor, with a primary practice location at Montgomery Baptist.  

A dedicated clinical researcher, Dr. Lloy has authored multiple peer-reviewed publications spanning both surgical oncology and basic science research, with additional manuscripts currently in preparation. Her research focuses on optimizing breast cancer treatment strategies while minimizing the physical and emotional burden of surgery, including the de-escalation of axillary surgery and advances in oncoplastic breast surgery. In addition to her published work, she has presented her research at regional and national scientific meetings.

About Dr. Jennifer Pappalardo

Jennifer Pappalardo, DPM, is now serving in the UAB Division of Vascular Surgery & Endovascular Therapy as a clinical associate professor. Her clinical practice focuses on conservative and reconstructive podiatric surgery and wound healing. Dr. Pappalardo’s research emphasizes high-risk diabetic foot conditions and complex lower extremity infections. She is a member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons, the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery, and the American Board of Podiatric Medicine.

About Dr. Anji Wall

The latest faculty member to join the UAB Division of Transplantation, Anji Wall, M.D., Ph.D., will serve as the department’s vice chair of surgical ethics and director of transplantation perfusion and procurement services. A dedicated surgeon-scientist, she has published 129 research articles; authored the book Ethics for International Medicine: A Practical Guide for Aid Workers in Developing Countries; and wrote an additional seven book chapters spanning topics from surgical ethics to transplantation. She currently serves on the editorial boards for Liver Transplantation, Frontiers in Transplantation, and the American Journal of Surgery.

Dr. Wall has delivered over 110 grand rounds and visiting professor lectures. A member of numerous surgical societies, including the American Society of Transplantation, the American Society of Transplant Surgeons, and the Consortium for Surgical Ethics, she has delivered over 100 conference presentations.

About Dr. Taylor Wallen

Taylor Wallen, M.D., will serve as an assistant professor in the UAB Division of Trauma & Acute Care Surgery. She attended medical school at the Central Michigan University College of Medicine. She then completed her surgical residency at the University of Cincinnati before coming to UAB for her fellowship in Trauma and Surgical Critical Care. Her research interests include shock, resuscitation, wound healing, and blood transfusion. She is a member of the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma.
