Russell was appointed to the editorial board following years of service as an ad hoc reviewer and multiple recent scholarly contributions to JSR. In 2024 and 2025, he authored several articles in the journal highlighting key advances in pediatric surgical care.

He has over published over 120 peer reviewed manuscripts. These publications reflect Russell’s commitment to improving pediatric surgical care, outcomes for critically injured children and advancing evidence-based resuscitation strategies.

Journal of Surgical Research is the official publication of the Association for Academic Surgery, which is published 14 times per year, and serves as a central platform for disseminating high-impact surgical research across specialties. As of June 2025, it holds an impact factor of 1.7, with a five-year impact factor of 2.0, placing it in the first quartile for surgical journals. The journal is indexed in major databases including PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Embase.

“I’m honored to join the editorial leadership of JSR,” said Russell. “This journal has long been a cornerstone of surgical research and education, and I’m excited to contribute to its mission of fostering innovation and excellence in academic surgery.”
