Designing Dreams, a nonprofit co-founded by UAB Division of Plastic Surgery resident Lauren Curwick, M.D., has begun broadening its mission to the state of Alabama. The organization's mission is to create healing spaces for children with cancer, bringing hope and happiness to their lives.
“When a child remains at home for months or even years, their environment becomes their entire world,” said Curwick. “By transforming their bedrooms into magical, personalized spaces, we provide them a place to play, dream, and heal. It’s about restoring light during a dark time.”
Since its inception, Designing Dreams has recruited multiple board members, volunteers, and interior designers nationwide, and has accomplished more than 30 bedroom transformations. The nonprofit’s work has gained recognition for its approach to improving quality of life. The organization has also teamed up with children’s hospitals and cancer support networks to identify families in need.
Curwick earned her medical degree from the University of Minnesota, before beginning her residency at UAB. Her commitment to caring for cancer patients motivated her to co-found Designing Dreams. In 2012, Curwick, her mother, and four college friends established Designing Dreams, a nonprofit dedicated to renovating bedrooms for children confined to their homes due to cancer treatments.
