Savanah Kirchner, communication specialist for the University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Neurosurgery, recently served as a guest speaker for an Intro to Public relations class on the University of Alabama at Birmingham campus. The class is taught by Jacquelyn “Jacque” Shaia, J.D., Ph.D., an associate professor in the UAB College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Communication Studies, director of the Public Relations curriculum and president of the Neurosurgery Leadership Council (NLC).
During her visit on April 3, 2025, Kirchner shared valuable insights on the role of communications in an academic healthcare setting. She spoke about the unique challenges and opportunities in healthcare communications, the importance of resume building for young professionals and how purpose-driven storytelling can amplify impact and reach.
Her presentation offered students a real-world perspective on the power of strategic communication and how it shapes public understanding in complex fields like medicine. Students were encouraged to think critically about their paths and effectively use their voice and skills in professional settings.
