Matthew Parr, M.D., Benjamin Saccomano, M.D., and Yasaman Alam, M.D., chief residents in the University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Neurosurgery, recently participated in the Chief Residents Leadership Development Workshop hosted by the UAB Medicine Leadership Development Office.

Held on May 9, 2025, the workshop was designed to support chief residents from UAB residency programs by enhancing their leadership competencies. Through small-group breakout sessions and interactive learning, participants explored key topics such as interpersonal communication and group dynamics—essential skills for clinical leaders.

The workshop reflects UAB Medicine’s continued investment in preparing its future physician leaders to navigate complex team environments and lead with confidence.

Working to develop strong leadership skills early in a physician’s career is critical, according to Matt Sherrer, M.D., MBA, FASA, FAACD, clinical consultant to the Leadership Development Office. Sherrer commented that while a resident’s chief year can be challenging, it is also a “fantastic stepping stone into either private or academic practice, where leading teams becomes a huge part of a physician's daily role.”
