Professor Bobbie Van Der Pol, Ph.D., and Assistant Professor Olivia Van Gerwen, M.D., MPH, in the UAB Division of Infectious Diseases, received prestigious honors from the American Sexually Transmitted Diseases Association for their exemplary contributions to scientific knowledge, leadership, and practice in the field of sexually transmitted infections (STI).
Van Der Pol received the Distinguished Career Award for her research on developing and evaluating new diagnostics, healthcare utilization, and implementation of point-of-care testing in clinical and nontraditional settings. She is committed to expanding access to sexual health tools and mentoring the next generation of scientists.
Van Gerwen received the Early Career Award for her work in community engagement, improving sexual health outcomes and access, HIV prevention, STI diagnostics, and vaginal health. She is also dedicated to teaching medical students, residents, and fellows in clinical and classroom settings.
Both will be honored at the STI and HIV World Congress in Montreal this summer. Congratulations to our outstanding scientists!
