The UAB Department of Medicine (DOM) recognized UAB Comprehensive Diabetes Center (UCDC) members, Fernando Bril, M.D., Alexandra Dodd, M.D., and Kirk Habegger, Ph.D., at DOM Recognition Day 2025.
DOM Recognition Day is an annual awards ceremony that honors faculty and staff for their major milestones and significant contributions to the department in research, education, clinical care, and support. Awards were presented at the Margaret Cameron Spain Auditorium on Nov. 19, 2025.
Dr. Fernando Bril, a UCDC associate scientist and assistant professor in the DOM Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism, was awarded the Division Top Teacher Award. Bril is an educator and physician who has published over 60 publications in the field of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), Type 2 diabetes, and obesity.
Dr. Alexandra Dodd, an associate scientist in the UCDC and assistant professor in the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism, was recognized with an Unsung Hero Award for delivering outstanding patient care while keeping the clinic running smoothly and efficiently in her role as Division Clinic Director.
Dr. Kirk Habegger, a UCDC scientist and professor in the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism, was recognized with a Division Research Excellence Award for his exceptional research contributions, which include a recent industry-sponsored project investigating the metabolic effects of glucagon receptor activation in emerging obesity treatments and a National Institutes of Health (NIH) multi-PI R01 grant studying the effectiveness of TIX100 in treating MASLD and MASH.
The UCDC congratulates these faculty members on their outstanding contributions to the center and to the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism.
