What is PrEP?
PrEP is an HIV prevention strategy that involves HIV-negative people taking anti-HIV medications to help prevent HIV acquisition. Several studies have shown that PrEP can significantly reduce the risk of becoming HIV-positive when taken as part of a package of prevention services.
The UAB PrEP Clinic offers all FDA-approved options for PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis), a safe and effective way to prevent HIV. These include:
- Truvada (and its generic versions) - a once-daily pill
- Descovy - a once-daily pill
- Apretude - a long-acting injectable given every two months
- Yeztugo - a long-acting injectable given every 6 months
Your provider will help you choose the option that works best for you.
Is PrEP Right for You?
Anyone who wants to protect themselves from HIV should consider PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis). It’s a safe, effective way to prevent HIV before exposure — and we offer all FDA-approved PrEP options, including Truvada (and generics), Descovy, Apretude, and Yeztugo.
You may especially benefit from PrEP if you:
- Have a partner living with HIV (especially if they have an unknown or detectable viral load
- Have sex without condoms
- Have been diagnosed with an STI in the past 6 months
- Inject drugs and share needles or have a partner who is HIV-positive
- Have used PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) more than once or continue to engage in higher-risk activities.
PrEP is for anyone who wants to take control of their sexual health. Call or email us to learn more and find out if PrEP is right for you.
Can I take PrEP during pregnancy or while breastfeeding?
If you have a partner living with HIV and are considering getting pregnant, talk to your healthcare provider about PrEP if you're not already taking it. PrEP may be an option to help prevent HIV transmission for you and your baby while you try to get pregnant, during pregnancy, or while breastfeeding.
How Can I Pay for Prep?
Most commercial insurance companies will cover PrEP and related costs (labs, visits) at little to no cost.
- If you have a copay for your medication, manufacturer copay assistance programs are available and your PrEP team can assist you with enrolling in these programs.
- If you are uninsured, you can still access PrEP. Call or email us to discuss options.
Ready to Get Started with PrEP?
Call the UAB PrEP Clinic at 205-975-0840 or email us at UAB-PrEP@uabmc.edu to see if we’re the right fit for you. If you're eligible, we’ll complete your intake over the phone prior to your initial clinic appointment. In most cases, all labs are collected at your first in-person appointment, including a full STI panel and safety labs. You will discuss the right PrEP option for you with one of our physicians and receive your first prescription. Follow-up visits and labs are typically scheduled every 2–3 months, depending on the PrEP option you choose.
