The Collection
AEIVA’s permanent collection preserves art of cultural and historical significance while providing an accessible educational tool for UAB students and the greater Birmingham community. Consisting of over 2,000 works of art, the collection’s focus is on post-WWII modern and contemporary art in a broad range of artistic disciplines, including painting, sculpture, photography, and video.
Major art movements of the past half century such as Pop Art, Conceptual Art, and Minimalism are represented through works by Mel Bochner, Darryl Curran, Peter Halley, Donald Judd, David Levinthal, Louise Nevelson, Dennis Oppenheim, James Rosenquist, Andy Warhol, and many others.
The collection also contains several works of social documentary photography, including a large collection of Bruce Davidson photographs documenting the Civil Rights Movement in 1960s New York, and a work by Gordon Parks. Southern artists including William Christenberry and Sally Mann, and artists working in a vernacular tradition, including Thornton Dial, Lonnie Holley, and Howard Finster are also well represented.
Recent acquisitions have been by contemporary artists Kathryn Andrews, Katherine Bernhardt, and Vadis Turner, among others.
