The Office of Research Conflicts of Interest (RCOI) is required to review disclosures of financial interests from each person who is responsible for the design, conduct, or reporting of (1) sponsored project and/or (2) protocol submitted to the Human Research Protection Program (HRPP).

A responsible investigator is defined as the PD/PI and any other person who is responsible for controlling the design, conduct, or reporting of research.

Responsible person

Please note that the definition of responsible does not necessarily include all project personnel or all personnel named in the budget.

Sponsored Projects:

The Project Personnel page of the Proposal SmartForm must list all responsible personnel. Note that the Project Personnel page should only list individuals as responsible if their roles meet the definition of a responsible person. If an individual on the Project Personnel page is considered responsible, answer yes to the question “Is this individual considered responsible?"

Protocols Submitted to the HRPP:

The IRB Personnel eForm must include all responsible personnel. Responsible personnel on HRPP protocols are those who are assigned roles/responsibilities designated by an asterisk (*) and/or who have one or more of the 3 yes/no questions marked “Yes”.

Changes in Responsible Personnel

Sponsored Projects:

An award modification must be submitted to add or remove responsible personnel. Instructions to Request an Award Modification are available on the myUABResearch website.

Protocols Submitted to the HRPP:

A Personnel Amendment must be submitted to the HRPP to add or remove responsible personnel. Instructions to submit a Personnel Amendment are available on the IRAP training website.

The RCOI Office will be notified of the personnel change in myUABResearch

Please note that when an investigator leaves the university, he or she must be removed from your projects. Maintaining accurate listings of responsible personnel is each PI's responsibility, and failure to do so could result in a finding of non-compliance for the principal investigator.

Questions regarding responsible personnel should be directed to the RCOI Office at 205-975-9691 or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
