The Conflict of Interest Committee (COIC) provides oversight and guidance in the review and management of financial conflicts of interest (FCOIs) and certain institutional conflicts of interest (ICOIs) related to research conducted at UAB. The committee plays a critical role in ensuring the integrity, transparency, and compliance of UAB’s research enterprise with federal regulations and institutional policies.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Full-time UAB faculty appointment, advance rank preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in research and regulatory compliance.
  • Familiarity with federal conflict of interest regulations (e.g., PHS/NIH FCOI regulations) and institutional research policies.
  • Strong analytical, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Administrative and leadership experience are essential.

Position Description

The COIC Chair reports to the Vice President for Research. The Chair will receive salary support equivalent to 10% effort (0.10 FTE) funded by the UAB Office of Research.

The COIC Chair will be responsible for the following:

  • Committee Leadership: Preside over and facilitate monthly COIC meetings; guide deliberations to ensure timely, consistent, and policy-aligned decisions.
  • Review of Financial Disclosures: Conduct detailed reviews of Significant Financial Interests (SFIs) disclosed by investigators; determine whether SFIs are related to research activities and assess whether they constitute an FCOI.
  • Conflict Management: Collaborate with the Research Conflicts of Interest (RCOI) Office to develop and oversee COI Management Plans; ensure strategies are appropriate, enforceable, and compliant with UAB policies.
  • Review of Projects Involving Potential ICOIs: Review some projects involving potential ICOIs and recommend management strategies to the COIC; serve as a member of the Institutional Conflict of Interest Committee.
  • Compliance and Policy Alignment: Ensure COIC activities align with federal regulations, sponsor requirements, and UAB policies; maintain awareness of evolving regulatory requirements and recommend policy updates.
  • Additional Expectations: Maintain confidentiality and objectivity; collaborate with institutional offices; serve as a resource and advisor to faculty and staff on COI matters.
