AKM McCall

“Student costume designer Cade McCall poses for a portrait in front of boxes and boxes of fabrics in the UAB costume design studio. Showing people in places they work, doing what they love, is one of my favorite things about photography.” — Andrea Mabry, university photographer

Read about McCall's work in Theatre UAB's new production "A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder" in this story by Shannon Thomason on UAB News.

IML Stitt

“If you have been able to indulge in the Birmingham food scene you will know who Frank Stitt is. One of the best chefs in the country serving his recipes in the Commons is not something to be missed. It was so cool to see him passionately explain his work to the students and staff.” — Ian Logue, university photographer

JAT Derby

"It was my third experience photographing the annual Gurney Derby and it just keeps getting better. I think this panning shot is a fun example of the level of intensity during the races. (Panning creates a crisp image of the subject(s) while blurring the background.) Even though the racers are the main attraction, the gold streamers glistening in the sunlight in the foreground really get my attention!"— Jennifer Alsabrook-Turner, university photographer

Check out a highlight video from this year's Gurney Derby on YouTube.

IML Derby

"The Gurney Derby is a UAB staple for a reason. It is so much fun and creates so much excitement on campus. I loved this shot I got during the awards ceremony when second place was announced. The second place team's supporters were so excited that not even a knee brace was going to stop the celebrations!"— Ian Logue, university photographer

JAT Arts Block Party

“October was a very busy month at UAB! I love having so much to photograph. This friendly face attended the Arts Block Party in early October. I couldn't resist the many variations of red in this composition. How fun!” — Jennifer Alsabrook-Turner, university photographer

AKM Rainbow

"Here, my fellow photographer Ian Logue is pretending to be on a phone call—and doing a great job acting. Balancing the light from the front and back of the tunnel creates some fun interest for this shot.” — Andrea Mabry, university photographer

IML McCallum Lab

“Finding new ways to shoot similar scenes is so rewarding. I go into a shoot trying to think 'what is a new angle or perspective that can tell a story or put the viewer more into the scene?' In this shoot, I found myself in a lab and came up with the idea to shoot through the bottom of a beaker as a doctor and medical student are pipetting into it. I think it came out great!” — Ian Logue, university photographer

AKM Volker

"The new spaces inside Volker Hall are truly exceptional. I wish I could hang out in this study area! I'm proud of this photo because it's lit with multiple strobes, but I don't think it's obvious that it's artificially lit. That's a tough feat to achieve sometimes, especially in a space with so many different facets."— Andrea Mabry, university photographer

JAT Scarlett

"Scarlett is our Digital Systems Support Specialist; in other words, she helps keep our ship afloat! Thankfully, as a photographer for UAB, shoots are scheduled for us, and we have Scarlett to thank for much of that. She wears multiple hats as proven in this photo. It's always nice to have someone with us on a long day of photographing, and on this day, Scarlett assisted me. One of the many things an assistant might do is stand in as a light test subject while we dial in the correct settings. I absolutely love this portrait of Scarlett!"— Jennifer Alsabrook-Turner, university photographer
