The end of spring semester and beginning of summer inspired an atmospheric night shot at the Crawfish Boil, a new-look drone image of University Boulevard, a childlike moment with Blaze and more for the photographers in UAB Marketing and Communications. Here are their favorite images from recent assignments.
“I have had this updated photo on my list for a while now — probably two years! I've been patiently waiting for the new research building (the one sitting behind the Hill Center's fin) to be at this stage of construction. It changes the view drastically, and it's exciting to think about all the incredible research that will take place inside.” — Andrea Mabry, senior university photographer
“I both love and hate challenging light. It can be incredibly rewarding to work in difficult lighting situations and actually create something you're proud of. This image was taken after sunset, during blue hour, and the main light source was from the food truck. It was also my last image of the night, at the end of a long day, and because of all the aforementioned details, I find it really satisfying.” — Jennifer Alsabrook-Turner, university photographer
“Blaze is known for being a cute dragon with a childlike outlook on life. I wanted to be sure to incorporate some silliness into Anna Deason's commencement photo shoot with him. Anna served as Blaze for three years. I thought it would be fun to have them play ‘Ring Around the Rosie,’ and I love the energy and movement in this photo.”— Andrea Mabry, senior university photographer

“I chose to share this photo because of the sheer joy expressed on this beautiful woman's face. I also like the fact that she's centered and the hand she's holding and outstretched fingers act as leading lines pointing to our subject. It's easy for the eyes to fall on the focal point of this image. I think it's a pleasant, simple portrait, but not a boring one."— Jennifer Alsabrook-Turner, university photographer
“In April I photographed outdoor track and field. I loved this shot I made of women's javelin. I cropped in to emphasize the focus of the athlete in the moment before she throws her javelin, and the way the javelin is casting a shadow over her eyes like a mask. I also like the strong lines of her arms and the javelin at similar angles.” — Ian Logue, university photographer
"We visited a chemistry lab in April to make some stock photos. Most of the experiments I chose made smaller, more controlled flames — things I could foresee folks around campus wanting to use photos of. I asked if there was one quick, experiment with an 'exuberant' flame we could add for some flair. This grain silo explosion simulation, created with lycopodium powder, was proposed. I'd say it delivered!"— Andrea Mabry, senior university photographer
“It wouldn't be spring at UAB without our gorgeous Campus Green flowerbeds. I'm so impressed with the variety of flowers, the care and attention they receive, and the wonderful color palette on display. This day in particular couldn't have been more perfect for outdoor photography. The temperature was mild and the sky showcased absolutely perfect clouds against a deep blue hue. I love the interesting perspective that created the illusion that the size of the flowerbed rivaled the size of our impressively large new research building.” — Jennifer Alsabrook-Turner, university photographer
“The month of April brought on one of the best events of the year: puppy yoga at the Hill Center. Just at the height of preparation for finals week, students could unwind with some adorable puppies. It was a joy to be there to see how happy everyone was, puppies included. There were various levels of interest in actually doing yoga, and plenty of interest in sitting and petting the puppies!”— Ian Logue, university photographer
