"We had the chance to photograph a crisis drill with the UAB Emergency Department and Birmingham Fire Department. I really enjoyed this shot of some of the drill participants in great spirits.” — Ian Logue, university photographer

An employee and her son at the Campus Rec Center's pool, photographed for upcoming water safety stories from UAB News.
“I love this image not only because of the sheer joy you see, but also because I can still hear his laughter. I'm not sure if I've ever seen someone so happy to swim! Choosing this image as a favorite was as easy as capturing his smile.” — Jennifer Alsabrook-Turner, university photographer
Employees can enjoy the pool and all the other Rec Center amenities with employee memberships. Learn more here. Active UAB employees who have not had a membership before can also get a free 7-day trial; see the details here.
“Pollen hangs from a bee's feet after it takes off from an orange butterfly milkweed, a plant native to Alabama. One day while taking photos of these bees with my cell phone, I thought to myself, 'Wow, this is so silly!' The next day, I returned with my macro lens and a real camera. Mind you, the macro is a manual focus lens, so I was hanging out with the bees for quite a while to make a handful of pictures that I love. The pollen hanging from this particular bee's feet is a nice treat. It was quite a peaceful, meditative way to spend a couple of afternoon hours.” — Andrea Mabry, university photographer

“The windows of Gorrie Hall reflect a beautiful sky. I think this photo showcases our new UAB logo very nicely, with the cool grey and blue tones. I happened to be waiting outside the newly finished building for a meeting and realized that it was the perfect time to make some photos. Clouds like this don't pop up on demand, and windows like this deserve to reflect puffy clouds!” — Andrea Mabry, university photographer
On June 3, UAB officially opened Frances and Miller Gorrie Hall, the new home for the School of Engineering, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Read more about the new facility, take a video tour and see more photos in this UAB News story.
“A genre of photography I enjoy is family photography, so I jump at the chance whenever a shoot arises involving children. On this day, I got to photograph a team member's child for a stock photography project. He really let his personality shine!” — Jennifer Alsabrook-Turner, university photographer

"There are many reasons to choose UAB as a place to study or work. One is the beautiful city of Birmingham. I had an opportunity to photograph Railroad Park during one of its most vibrant times of the year. I recently learned that this flower that you see so many of there is called rudbeckia mansia, a.k.a. giant coneflower, and it can grow up to eight feet tall!"— Jennifer Alsabrook-Turner, university photographer
“Catching this bee on stokes aster, a plant native to Alabama, was quite a bit simpler than with the milkweed plant. It seemed perfectly content to hang out on this one flower for a few minutes. The snowy pollen on the bee's body and the luminous, textural centers of the flowers mesmerize me.” — Andrea Mabry, university photographer
In addition to the pollinator garden at the UAB Solar House, there is a pollinator garden at Honors Hall (the garden is at the intersection of 10th Avenue South and 14th Street South). This is an official Monarch Waystation, providing shelter and food for monarch butterflies, in addition to bees and other local pollinators.
