Summer at UAB brings learning opportunities across campus for children and adults alike, from hands-on activities in engineering and arts camps to the popular cooking classes in UAB's Teaching Kitchen. Here are some of the favorite images our photographers in UAB Marketing and Communications captured this summer.

Sunset over the Birmingham skyline as seen from The Club

“It's always a treat to spend an evening on top of Red Mountain, waiting for the sunset. This particular day had been a rollercoaster of emotion, waiting to see if the weather would hold out for good photos. The morning started out spectacularly sunny, but by early afternoon a thick blanket of clouds let loose a deluge of rain. As luck would have it, I had beautiful clouds and an incredible sunset that evening. That's Alabama weather for you!” — Andrea Mabry, senior university photographer

Hands applying paint to canvas at ArtPlay summer camp

“UAB's ArtPlay is one of my favorite education centers. It's located inside a historic Victorian-style house, which is brimming with character. As a former art major and art teacher, I value the arts and think this space and their programs are wildly important! I had the opportunity to photograph the Watercolor and Pastels Camp in July. It was full of quiet, creative children, and lovely art; and it made my heart ache a little for my previous career. Please enjoy this close-up of busy hands, stained by the beauty of the creative process.” — Jennifer Alsabrook-Turner, university photographer

Employee pets a Hand in Paw dog at the Be Seen Relaxing in Green

“In July, the UAB Staff Council put on the Be Seen Relaxing In Green event. This was a great chance to meet some adorable pups with Hand in Paw and pick up some UAB merch. This dog is named Hasley and spent the majority of this event on her back awaiting belly rubs.”— Ian Logue, university photographer

Still frame from time lapse video of cooking class with students around room

“I've been excited to cover one of Maddison Garcia's cooking classes since I learned about the nutrition department's series. I was lucky enough to be gifted two tickets to this particular class, so I made a timelapse while my husband and I cooked food. Here, the class made pan-cooked polenta with heirloom tomatoes and burrata, a zucchini ribbon salad with corn, and a grapefruit-basil mocktail.”— Andrea Mabry, senior university photographer

Closeup of student with back to camera holding a small circuit board in a coding camp class

“UAB hosts many summer camps. On a hot July afternoon I photographed teens at the Robotics, AI, and Coding Camp. On my golf cart drive to Gorrie Hall, I remember thinking how grateful I was that my photo assignment for the day would be indoors. There was an abundance of enthusiastic learning to photograph! I really like this close-up and the teen's intense focus."— Jennifer Alsabrook-Turner, university photographer

View of the large white letters that spell U A B on the Campus Green with flowers in the foreground

“During the summer, campus can be very quiet, but the plant life around the Campus Green is thriving. I enjoyed this shot of the UAB letters through the line of trees on University Boulevard. The colors are so vibrant and separate beautifully from the white of the letters!” — Ian Logue, university photographer

Two participants in the pinhole workshop take selfies with their cameras outside AEIVA with the Alys Stephens Center seen behind them

"The pinhole camera workshop at AEIVA with assistant professor of photography Jillian Browning felt like playtime for me. I loved seeing adults creating their pinhole cameras, searching for a good spot for a photo, then sitting with their cameras for 1-3 minutes while they exposed their film. In this case, two attendees decided to make self portraits right next to each other."— Andrea Mabry, senior university photographer

Empty staircase and tables on the ground floor of Heritage Hall

“UAB's architecture impresses me! I've been working on a project this summer called Empty/Full Spaces. I'm photographing both interior and exterior spaces that are noticeably empty in the summer, that we expect to be full of life in the fall when the bulk of the student population returns. One space I photographed was Heritage Hall. I especially love the amount of natural light and mix of metal and glass. I also think the attention to detail is really nice-the cohesive color palette throughout with its combination of greens and warm, natural wood.” — Jennifer Alsabrook-Turner, university photographer
