The bike storage room in the Altec/Styslinger Genomic Medicine and Data Sciences BuildingWhether you are an employee or student, a bicycle, e-bike or scooter can be a great way to commute, get to class or reach a cross-campus meeting. Where can you store it? Several new options are available at UAB.
Where can you keep your bike?
New interior bike storage rooms are now open in three locations on campus:
- University Hall (room 1020)
- East Science Hall (room 1112) in the Science and Engineering Complex
- Altec/Styslinger Genomic Medicine and Data Sciences Building (room 121)
Each offers racks and a safe, approved place to keep your bike while you move about campus. To get access, fill out this form to have one or more of these rooms added to your ONE Card. (If you are off campus, you must use VPN to see the form.)
There are 22 bike storage lockers in a covered location outside Lister Hill Library.
Another option, outside but in a covered area on the ground floor of Lister Hill Library, are 22 bike storage lockers; apply for access at the UAB Transportation Office. The lockers can fit most regular bikes and some e-bikes — they are approximately 4 feet high x 6 feet 5 inches deep x 3 feet wide at the opening and narrow toward the back.
Additionally, there are bike racks located across campus. You can see many of them on this map.
For safety reasons, electric scooters and e-bikes may not be brought into UAB buildings.
Register your bike or scooter and get a free lock, helmet
Bike and scooter owners should take advantage of a free program through UAB Transportation that allows them to register their machine and get a helmet and a U-lock at no charge. U-locks are the best way to secure bikes and scooters, according to UAB Police. Learn more here.
What about e-bikes and scooters?
Note for e-bike and scooter users: UAB policy does not allow these devices inside campus buildings. This is because their lithium-ion batteries can malfunction, with a significant risk of fire and/or explosion. Read more about the policy in this article and read the full text of the policy here.
UAB is actively researching racks and other storage options for e-bikes and scooters that address the safety concerns caused by their batteries, says Bambi Ingram, sustainability manager. “Suggestions and community input are welcome,” Ingram said. Contact
