These sessions give faculty and staff the opportunity to ask questions, discuss scenarios and gain a deeper understanding of compliance requirements that impact their daily work, says Courtney Champion, J.D., director of University Compliance. In-person learning “helps ensure clarity, connection and confidence across your whole team,” Champion said.

Over the past few years, the Office of Compliance and Risk Assurance has increased its focus on campus engagement “in order to provide information about emerging risks and topics that are relevant to employees in their day-to-day responsibilities,” Champion explained.

Specific topics of interest vary based on a team’s operational responsibilities. “We often recommend our Code of Conduct training to departments,” Champion said. “This training broadly covers the eight standards of behavior in the UAB Enterprise Code of Conduct and encourages employees to use the code as a framework for ethical decision-making in their work. This training can be customized to focus on the specific compliance topics that are most relevant to the department, such as conflicts of interest, effort reporting or privacy.”

Many departments incorporate training into regularly scheduled employee or leadership team meetings, Champion said: “We have developed interactive activities as part of this training to give employees the opportunity to apply the information to scenarios developed based on their office’s unique operations.”

The Office of Compliance and Risk Assurance is available to provide training on any of the following focus areas:

  • UAB Enterprise Code of Conduct,
  • effort reporting,
  • conflicts of interest/commitment,
  • privacy,
  • policy development, and
  • reporting and investigations.

“If a department is interested in other subject areas, such as research compliance or Title IX, we are happy to collaborate with one of our compliance partners to provide subject matter expertise on that particular topic,” Champion said.
