MAGICcity Health Grant

The MAGICcity Health Grant is supported by the Health Resource and Services Administration (HRSA). This program aims to develop and deliver a culturally and developmentally appropriate, evidence-based healthy lifestyle and nutrition education program for children and develop a community based interprofessional pediatric learning experience for pre-licensure nursing and nutrition science students.

Through MAGICcity Health community children learn healthy habits while attending the Health Club at a local elementary school. Nursing and nutrition students work with our community partner Sixth Avenue Baptist Church’s Summer at Sixth Camp day camp to continue health education over the summer months.

Pathway to Professional Nursing

Pathway to Professional Nursing (PPN) & Other Healthcare Careers is university community partnership with Birmingham City Schools. Students interested in nursing or other health professions enroll in the program upon entry to high school. The program prepares students for success in health career education program after high school.

While in the program students receive mentorship, learn clinical skills in the classroom and clinical settings, and build on communication and leadership skills. Upon graduation students will be eligible to sit for a certification exam that meets the criteria for employment in a health care setting.

“Youth with Purpose” Health Clubs

“Youth with Purpose” Health Clubs is an initiative of the National Association of Hispanic Nurses (NAHN), Alabama Chapter in collaboration with the UAB SON Office of Access and engagement, led by Dr. Grace Grau. This immersive experience reflects the shared commitment of NAHN, UAB SON, and community partners to cultivate the next generation of nurse leaders – grounded in compassion, culture, and care – for the communities they will one day serve.
