Dr. Connie ShaoExecutive Vice Chair of Surgery Gregory Kennedy, M.D., Ph.D., begins his term this month as President of the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract (SSAT).

The SSAT’s main objective is to strengthen the practice, care, and science of gastrointestinal (GI) surgery. Their vision includes strengthening collaborative research efforts, expanding educational programs, and advocating for policies that improve patient care.

Kennedy, a professor in the Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery, also serves as the John H. Blue Chair of General Surgery, the Cancer Network Director of the O’Neal Cancer Service Line.

Kennedy’s main clinical focus is the care of the complex GI surgery patient. He is committed to minimally invasive approaches to colorectal disease. His research has focused on chemoprevention of colorectal cancer as well as quality improvement initiatives in colorectal surgery.

“I am truly excited to take on the role of President of the SSAT,” Kennedy said. “This is a fantastic opportunity to collaborate with talented surgeons and push the boundaries of our field. Together, we can make a real difference in patient outcomes and surgical education.”

Kennedy will begin his term as president of the SSAT May 6, 2025 and will serve until May 6 the following year.
