Overview

The Gynecologic Pathology Section at the UAB provides diagnostic interpretations of routine gynecology and gynecologic oncology specimens for UAB Hospital, satellite clinics, and O’Neil Comprehensive Cancer Center patients. It receives consultations that serve UAB pathology outreach services (CPPP), other local and regional institutions, providing comprehensive review of the cases. From the approximately 50,000 surgical pathology accessions performed at UAB Surgical Pathology laboratory, about 4,500 represent gynecologic pathology specimens, including in-house and consultation material. The pathologists in the Gynecologic Pathology team participate in weekly interdisciplinary tumor board, daily sign out, educational activities for medical students, residents, and fellows, and other professional development activities. Faculty members also participate in basic or translational research projects, and collaborate in interdisciplinary clinical trials or other research programs. A one-year advanced training program/focused fellowship experience in Diagnostic Gynecologic Pathology is offered. Combined GYN/GU and Breast/GYN one-year fellowship options are also available.

Residency/Fellowship Training

Residents spend 2 months (8 weeks) in the GYN pathology rotation, and are primarily responsible for uterus, ovary, fallopian tube, cervix, vulva, and other specimens involved by gynecologic pathology related disorders. Additional elective time is available. Daily sign-out occurs as two separate services (UAB cases/outside consults). Residents and fellows preview and share cases, and review them with faculty member at the daily sessions at the multiheaded microscopes. Residents are responsible for previewing cases prior to sign out and reporting all diagnostic features included in synoptic reports and immunohistochemical stains. The residents incorporate all test results into the draft reports. The GYN pathology faculty give didactic lectures to residents during their rotation, including an intensive series of practically-oriented lectures and slide review sessions during the daily sign-out sessions.

Gynecologic Oncology Tumor Board and Educational Conferences

Gynecologic pathology faculty and fellow participate in the weekly Gynecologic Oncology Tumor Board conference to discuss diagnostic findings and how they relate to clinical findings, imaging studies, and therapeutic strategies. Fellows and residents present at journal club at the weekly Anatomic Pathology conference series.

Gynecologic Pathology Consultation and Tests

The Gynecologic pathology team provides comprehensive expert consultative service for gynecologic tract, ovary, vulvar, and other related specimens. The cases are evaluated using a comprehensive panel of immunohistochemical stains, as applicable. The Genomic division offers FISH testing and multigene NGS panels.
