This four and a half day annual workshop is held on the UCSD/VASDHCS campus. Led by Dr. Volker Vallon, faculty from UCSD and UAB organize an annual workshop designed to practice animal handling and phenotyping techniques for commonly used methods to study kidney function in the rat and mouse. The format includes lectures (about 2 hours a day), demonstrations and hand-on practical training (about 6 hours a day). Participants receive a detailed workshop folder including all workstation handouts and lecture slides. This workshop is limited to 9 participants for the maximum interaction and time for training and discussion.

The 12th workshop has been held from May 12 - 16, 2025 focusing on hands-on whole kidney and single nephron function analysis and models of acute and chronic kidney disease. The number of participants is limited to 9 for maximum training and interaction. A few comments provided by this group of participants: “very friendly atmosphere”; “I like that the course had a lot of hands-on practical sessions. This was very impressive”; "I thoroughly enjoyed learning both techniques I would need for my research and techniques I may never use but were and are integral for understanding the fundamentals of kidney biology”; “I enjoyed all parts of training. Every module was unique & very informative"; "Good progression of course!"; “I liked the detailed physiology lectures”; “I love the design. Lecture followed by lab is brilliant”; “This course was everything I expected and much more"; “I enjoyed getting instruction from highly experienced researchers who had so much wisdom to share”; "Instructors were very passionate about their research and it was contagious"; “I enjoyed the hands-on demonstrations. They were engaging and will be very useful for me going forward”.
