The UAB Department of Urology congratulates three of its faculty members who were recently promoted and awarded tenure.
Adam Baumgarten, M.D., MBA, Charles Peyton, M.D., and Carmen Tong, D.O., were each promoted from assistant professor to associate professor with tenure, effective Oct. 1, 2025.
"I’m incredibly proud of doctors Baumgarten, Peyton, and Tong," said Tom Chi, M.D., MBA, professor and chair, Anton J. Bueschen, M.D., Endowed Chair in the UAB Department of Urology. "Their hard work scholarship, and commitment to our mission continue to elevate our department."
Baumgarten joined the Department of Urology as an Assistant Professor in 2020. He currently holds the positions of Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs and Departmental Value Officer. In addition to his departmental roles, he is an Associate Scientist at the Center for Clinical and Translational Science. He specializes in the treatment of erectile dysfunction, male stress urinary incontinence, Peyronie’s disease, and male urethral and ureteral stricture disease. Baumgarten was recently selected to join the 2025-2026 Leadership Class of the American Urological Association Institute for Leadership and Business, designed to shape the future leaders of urology.
Peyton joined the Department of Urology as an assistant professor in 2019. A fellowship-trained surgeon through the Society of Urologic Oncology at Moffitt Cancer Center, Peyton also serves as an associate scientist in both the Center for Clinical and Translational Science and the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center. Peyton maintains a very busy surgical practice, specializing in the surgical management of complex urologic cancers, including bladder, kidney, and testicular malignancies. Peyton has been recognized as a national leader in genitourinary cancers and appointed to the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) guidelines committees. He serves as the principal investigator for multiple ongoing national clinical trials and is committed to the vision that we provide outstanding care and clinical trial options for UAB patients.
Tong joined the Department of Urology as an assistant professor in 2020 and currently holds the positions of Assistant Program Director, Urology Residency and Medical Student Urology Clerkship Director. Tong, who completed her fellowship in pediatric urology at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, shares a dual appointment in pediatric urology at Children’s of Alabama. She specializes in minimally invasive robotic surgery and treats conditions such as spina bifida, neurogenic bladder, and complex urinary tract reconstruction.
