Anderson_AAPath_certificate_program_2025.pngPeter Anderson, D.V.M., Ph.D., professor emeritus in the Division of Molecular and Cellular Pathology, delivered one of the inaugural lectures for a new certificate program offered by the Association of Academic Pathology (AAPath) at its annual meeting in Denver, Colorado. This program is designed for health science faculty at all levels of experience who seek professional development to enhance their teaching effectiveness, expand their knowledge and expertise in curricular development and advance their careers as health science educators.

The newly developed two-year longitudinal program was created by Anderson and fellow members of the AAPath Academy of Distinguished Pathology Educators. Anderson was selected as part of the inaugural class of Distinguished Pathology Educators in 2023. The group seeks to address various facets of medical education from the unique perspective of pathology’s role in training physicians at all levels.

The AAPath certificate program includes four one-hour interactive sessions annually, focusing on topics relevant to health profession educators and tailored specifically to pathology education. Most sessions will be delivered remotely via Zoom, with at least one in-person session held each year at the AAPath annual meeting. Zoom sessions will be recorded and made available for asynchronous viewing.

Anderson, who recently retired after more than 40 years with the UAB Department of Pathology, has been a transformative educator at UAB since 1984, when he taught his first course for medical students. Following his retirement, he has continued to work part-time on research collaborations, teaching, mentoring and managing the Pathology Education Instructional Resource (PEIR) website.
