The Department of Pathology is thrilled to announce Oyedele Adeyi, M.D., FRCPC, as director of the Division of Anatomic Pathology, effective June 6, 2025.
Adeyi joins the department from the University of Minnesota Medical School where he served as professor since 2019 and as director of surgical pathology. Prior to his appointment at Minnesota, Adeyi joined the University of Toronto in Canada as an assistant professor in 2006 and was promoted to associate professor in 2014.
Adeyi earned his medical degree from the University of Ibadan’s College of Medicine in Ibadan, Nigeria, in 1987 before completing both a medical internship and residency in pathology at Lagos University Teaching Hospital in Lagos, Nigeria in 1996. In 2000, Adeyi completed a research fellowship in renal pathology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts. In 2005, Adeyi completed his residency in anatomic and clinical pathology at Dartmouth Medical School in Lebanon, New Hampshire, and in 2006, Adeyi completed a clinical fellowship in liver and transplantation pathology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
The Minnesota Monthly Magazine named Adeyi Top Doctor in both 2022 and 2023. He serves as a member of the editorial board for Annals of Diagnostic Pathology. In 2019, he received the Leadership in Education National Award from the Canadian Association of Pathologists. Adeyi has authored nearly 120 publications and given numerous presentations. He currently serves as an ad hoc reviewer for Transplantation Direct and Modern Pathology and previously served for Gene, American Journal of Clinical Pathology, Human Pathology, Plos One, Liver International, Virchows Archive, Transplantation, Archives of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Journal of Clinical Pathology, American Journal of Transplantation, The Open Pathology Journal and Journal of the Pancreas.
An experienced clinician, Adeyi served as a staff pathologist since 2006. He has been a pathology consultant for 10 organizations and companies. Adeyi is currently a member of Banff International Group on Allograft Pathology, American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, Hans Popper Hepatopathology Society, Canadian Medical Protective Association, American Society of Transplantation, College of American Pathologists and United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology. He serves as vice chair and chair-elect of the International Liver Transplantation Society’s Pathology Committee and in several other capacities in various advisory and member committee roles.
Adeyi has mentored nearly 100 undergraduate students, residents and fellows since 2008. He developed a comprehensive study set containing 1,700 slides for students, trainees and visiting pathologists covering more than 80% of native and transplant liver diseases. Adeyi has worked extensively on curriculum development and collaborative education efforts and activities.
Adeyi assumes the role from Thomas Winokur, M.D., who has served as interim division director since March 2024. Prior to this position, Winokur served as interim division director for the Division of Women’s Health since 2022.
