Each quarter, the Heersink School of Medicine Office for Diversity and Inclusion hosts Staff Grand Rounds, featuring guest speakers who provide educational content to staff.
This quarter on April 30, Michelle Horvath, J.D., university ombudsperson at UAB, delivered the presentation for Staff Grand Rounds.
An Ombudsperson is an impartial and confidential resource within an organization, specializing in conflict resolution and providing a safe space for individuals to address various concerns, including workplace and academic issues, administrative processes, and policy interpretations. Horvath’s services are available to all those working at UAB.
With a background in higher education spanning various prestigious institutions, including Florida International University, Cornell University, and Truman State University, Horvath has honed her expertise in conflict management and resolution. She holds a Bachelor of Science in History, a Juris Doctor, and a Master of Arts in Higher Education/Student Personnel.
Four types of conflicts
During her presentation, “Addressing Conflicts: Triage in the Workplace,” Horvath delved into the four distinct types of conflicts common among those working in medical settings. These categories include conflicts related to patient care, reporting structure, life, and leadership. By defining these areas, Horvath aimed to clarify the nature of conflict and its various forms. Horvath defined conflict as "something when we have two options that conflict.”
Though conflicts are often unwelcome, they are an unavoidable aspect of professional life. Horvath emphasized that "our approach to conflict is influenced by our experiences, individual personalities, and fears."
Horvath’s presentation provided attendees with valuable insights and solutions for navigating conflicts. By understanding the root cause of a conflict, we can cultivate a more positive approach to resolving them.
