Can current medical students apply for the International Visiting Medical Observership program?
In order to participate in the International Visiting Medical Observership program, you must have graduated with a MD or MD equivalent by the start date of your opportunity.

When can I apply for IVMO?
You can apply year-round. Applications must be submitted at least 6 months prior to your opportunity start date.

What is the cancellation policy?
All cancellations must be received in writing by email to observer@uab.edu.
- For cancellation of your observership more than 60 calendar days before the start date of the observership, only half of your observership fee will be refunded, minus any administrative or financial processing fees.
- For cancellation of your observership fewer than 60 calendar days before the start date of the observership, there will be no refund given ($0 - U.S.).
- If you cancel more than 90 calendar days before the start date of the elective due to Visa refusal by US Embassy and you provide proper proof of registration and proof of refusal, there will be a full refund of the elective fee minus any administrative or financial processing fees. Please note: The inability to obtain a Visa appointment with the U.S. Embassy within time to receive Visa prior to elective start date does not qualify under this cancelation policy for Visa refusal.
- The application fee of $350 (U.S.) is non-refundable.
- Failure to respond to emails or complete pre-matriculation requirements at least two weeks prior to the start date will be considered a cancellation, and no refund will be given.
- If you choose not to participate and drop out of the program, or UAB International Medical Education is notified of non-participation on or after the observership start date, no refund will be given.
- If unacceptable behavior is exhibited by any international visiting medical observer, we reserve the right to withdraw the observer’s acceptance in the program with no refund given.

Can I attend the IVMO program on a B2 passport stamp or am I required to have a B1?
UAB International Medical Education follows the advice of the U.S. Department of State and Foreign Affairs Manual followed by the U.S. consulates and embassies (FAM) in recommending that students participating in the IVMO Programenter the United States on a B-1/B-2 Visa with passport stamp for B-1 (Business) per the S. Department of State and Foreign Affairs Manual - section - 9 FAM 402.2-5(E) (3) (U).

I’m a US Citizen. Can I apply for the IVMO program?
If you are an international medical graduate, then yes, you can apply for the IVMO program.

Do you provide housing and/or transportation for international visiting medical observers?
No, the visiting observer is responsible for locating and paying for lodging and transportation for the duration of their opportunity at UAB.

What is the difference between an International Visiting Medical Observer and an International Visiting Scholar Observer?
IVMO is a program designed for international medical graduates who, upon acceptance, will be entered into a pool of applicants for matching with a UAB Medicine host. IVS Observers are invited to observe by a UAB faculty member.

What if my application doesn’t match with a host?
If your application fails to match after 60 days of acceptance, your application will be removed from the applicant pool, and you will need to reapply for further consideration.

If my application is rejected, can I reapply?
No, rejected applications will not be eligible for resubmission.
