The goal of the Stem Cell program is to conduct rigorous scientific studies to enhance our knowledge of normal and altered stem cell development and to advance treatments and improve outcomes for patients.

Research Areas
The Stem cell program includes investigators across UAB who are conducting research to understand mechanisms of regulation of normal and diseased stem cells, their cross-talk with the microenvironment, and to advance stem cell targeted therapies for patients. Stem cell program faculty are investigating diverse aspects of stem cell biology and therapeutics, including stem cells in hematopoiesis and leukemia (Ahn, Bhatia, Cheng, Grant, Klug, Lu, Matlowska-Wasowska, Welner), cardiovascular system (Sethu, Ye, Zheng, Zhou), respiratory system (Davis, Suzuki), melanocytes (Harris) and neurogenesis (Saxena). skeletal muscle and ageing (Alexander, Hartman, McDonald, Thalacker-Mercer), and computational biology (Cheng, McDonald). They are also studying pluripotent stem cells to understand basic mechanisms and application to modeling development of tissue stem cells, genetic diseases and cancer (Song, Suzuki, Wille, Zhao). Therapeutically directed studies include gene correction for inherited disorders such as cystic fibrosis and muscular dystrophies, and stem cell directed therapeutics for acquired diseases including cancers, and ageing.
