The Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG) is a student-led organization that empowers medical students on campus to learn more about the family medicine specialty. There are similar interest groups on campus for other specialties that offer a place for medical students to ask questions, plug into professional organizations, and learn more about the departments that represent these specialties on campus.

Mission

The Family Medicine Interest Group strives to cultivate interest in family medicine, aid in professional development, and offer service to our community.

Vision

We aim to shape the next generation of physicians dedicated to family medicine, and subsequently create a lasting impact on health care delivery and improve overall health outcomes.

Goals

Facilitate opportunities for medical students to explore family medicine, including exposing them to the wide range of opportunities in the field.

Provide opportunities for mentorship, networking, and leadership development for medical students interested in family medicine.

Conduct service projects for the community with an emphasis on vulnerable populations.

Introduce medical students to the importance of advocacy to help shape health care policy.

Enhance understanding of population health in our area and promote a sense of responsibility in addressing health disparities.

Background

The UAB Family Medicine Interest Group is part of a national network of FMIGs that is sponsored by the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP). The local, state (Alabama AFP) and national networks allows students great opportunities for leadership development.

Sponsorship

The Alabama Academy of Family Physicians Foundation and the Alabama Rural Health Board generously provide funding for our FMIG.
