On Wednesday, Department of Medicine employees gathered in the Margaret Cameron Spain Auditorium as Wellness Council co-chairs Kaitlyn Waugaman, MPH, Josh Stripling, M.D., and subcommittee members shared key updates on the council’s progress. Council members identified improvement in efforts in leadership evaluation, clinical scheduling and communication, and onboarding and retention.

Multidimensional Approach Expands Identification of COPD
Surya Bhatt, M.D., professor in PACCM, found that a new COPD diagnostic approach integrating respiratory symptoms and structural lung abnormalities on CT imaging better identified patients with COPD and excluded those with airflow obstruction but no symptoms or lung damage. This method could enhance diagnostic accuracy.
Nolan to Study CKMS in Women
Timiya Nolan, Ph.D., associate professor in GIMPOP, joins a multi-university initiative — Beyond One Size Fits All (B-FIT) — to undertake three different projects to better understand cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic (CKM) syndrome in women.
Walker Receives Leonard Tow Humanism Award
Jeremey Walker, M.D., assistant professor in ID, received the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award from the Arnold P. Gold Foundation in recognition of his outstanding mentorship and example of humanism at UAB. He will deliver the 2025 White Coat ceremony speech at UAB.

Nanda Directs International Conference on ECG
Navin Nanda, M.D., distinguished professor in CVD, served as the Director of the 37th Annual International Conference on Recent Advances in Echocardiography and Allied Techniques. Over 60 national and international experts gathered in Chicago, Illinois, to present their cases.
