The UAB Brain Aging and Memory Clinic opened in spring 2024, marking a new era of care in the field of Alzheimer’s disease and other memory-related disorders for Alabama and the region. One initiative the new space has helped support is clinical trials, bolstering UAB’s status as a performance site for the clinical trials of the most recent generation of anti-Alzheimer therapies. 

Five new scholars have joined the UAB Alzheimer's Disease Research Center's (ADRC) REC Scholars program, which aims to develop research expertise in Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. As part of the Research Education Component (REC), the program offers mentorship and a specialized curriculum, helping scholars build experience in cross-disciplinary, team-based science.

This finding suggests that therapy to remodel synapses could help memory in old age and dementia patients.

These findings could lead to non-invasive, low-cost tests and the early diagnosis of the disease, which progresses for decades before symptoms of dementia emerge.   

In October, UAB announced a $5 million gift to establish the James Milton and Sallie R. Johnson Fund to Support Alzheimer’s Disease Research in the Department of Neurology and the UAB Center for Neurodegeneration and Experimental Therapeutics.
