UAB supports and encourages international travel by employees and students for the purpose of furthering the educational, research, and service missions of UAB.  However, UAB also maintains the right to restrict travel to locations with a heightened safety risk in order to safeguard the well-being of students, faculty, and staff going abroad.

Employees and students wishing to travel to a high-risk location may request an exception to policy according to the Protocol for Heightened Review of International Travel to Restricted Locations. The UAB International Travel Risk Management Committee reviews travel requests and makes the final decision about such travel. Travel can be approved when there is compelling justification, and no suitable alternative opportunities exist. All requests must be strongly linked to academic goals and must adequately address major health, safety, or security concerns. The UAB International Travel Risk Management Committee will not support travel that takes place without adhering to the requirements of the Protocol for Heightened Review of International Travel to Restricted Locations.

Those traveling on UAB business should be aware that policies and procedures governing behavior and financial affairs apply regardless of the location where UAB business is conducted.

UAB International Travel Risk Management Committee

The UAB International Travel Risk Management Committee (ITRMC) develops guidelines and reviews high-risk international activities to maintain the health and safety of UAB students, faculty, and staff who study or conduct research and/or business internationally.

The ITRMC is comprised of representatives from across the university, including the Senior International Officer, the Director of University Risk Management, the dean or associate dean (of international activity) of the student’s degree-granting school, the Director of Global Affairs, and the Associate Director of Education Abroad. For faculty and staff travel requests, a member of the Office of Research Safety and Security also serves on the committee.
